Anker SoundCore Sport XL full review

SoundCore Sport XL Bluetooth speaker

With the Bluetooth speaker market booming, it’s hard to stand out from the masses. One of the Anker SoundCore Sport XL’s points of difference is its sturdiness. The speaker may be heavy but its waterproof and built to be taken to the beach, camping and other rugged outdoor areas where you want to listen to some sweet tunes. It is available on Amazon for £54.99. See also: Best budget Bluetooth speakers 2016.

Anker SoundCore Sport XL Review: Build quality & design

SoundCore Sport XL Bluetooth speaker

The smooth rubber exterior is shock-resistance, IP67 waterproof rated (1m depth) and dust-tight. It’s sturdy and not a fingerprint magnet, designed to withstand the tough outdoors. However, although you may not need to be as precious with this device, it’s hefty and you would notice the extra weight (over 365g) in your backpack on a tramp.

The device comes with an attachable wristband, and simple but effective play, power, volume and Bluetooth buttons. These buttons double as answer and reject controls when taking a hands-free call with a built-in noise-cancelling mic.

LED lights accompany a beeping noise when you turn it on, and let you know when the device needs charging or is fully charged.

If you’re picky about colours then you’re out of luck – this device only comes in black.

Anker SoundCore Sport XL Review: Connectivity and battery life

SoundCore Sport XL Bluetooth speaker

The speaker uses Bluetooth 4.1, and comes with a 5V 2A USB output, Micro-USB charging port and 3.5mm AUX input. It comes with a Micro-USB cable so you can charge your phone will playing music, but the device doesn’t come with a cord for the 3.5mm AUX input.

The speaker takes three to four hours to fully charge, offering up to 15 hours of playtime, depending on your interaction with the device, volume level and audio content.

Its Bluetooth range is impressive. Without walls getting in the way, you can change songs from 20 metres away, making it ideal for outdoor situations.

Anker SoundCore Sport XL Review: Sound quality

SoundCore Sport XL Bluetooth speaker

Two 8W stereo drivers are built into this black box, along with two dual passive subwoofers for bass. The music is loud for a small room and would carry nicely in the outdoors, but may not provide the best choice for a large lounge.

The bass has a good impact but doesn’t extend into the sub-bass regions, and the treble provides a decent output but also doesn’t extend or give sparkle compared to other speakers at a similar price point. We found the sound to be slightly V-shaped and have recessed mids, which is unfortunate, given its price tag.

We did find its soundstage to be wide and have a good depth, providing you with a good surround sound from a Bluetooth speaker.
