Porsche Design's CEO, Jan Becker spoke about the strengths of the new ultra-premium Mate 40 RS variant but left it to Huawei's own Richard Yu to introduce the watch; which at a fundamental level looks to be a subtle reworking of the company's latest Watch GT 2 Pro, with some Porsche Design trappings on top.
Like the GT 2 Pro it sports a sapphire glass front, a titanium casing and a ceramic back - an already-premium foundation as smartwatches go. In its Porsche Design guise, the GT 2 also benefits from an exclusive branded titanium linked band with a deployant clasp.
Such a material choice is undeniably premium but also helps keep weight down, while both the band as a whole, as well as its individual links all feature quick-release mechanisms - for easy, tool-free removal and resizing.

Porsche Design is also responsible for a series of exclusive watch faces that appear markedly more understated than the seemingly over-engineered body of the Mate 40 RS.
Beyond the cosmetic, everything else carriers across from the Watch GT 2 Pro; with up to two weeks battery life, SpO2 monitoring, wireless charging, sleep tracking and support for additional sport modes, including golf.
The one other big difference compared to the rest of the Watch GT 2 line is the price, with that Porsche Design premium meaning that instead of the GT 2 Pro's £299/€299 asking price, this luxury variant sells for a more considerable £629.99/€695.
The Porsche Design Huawei Watch GT 2 will be available direct from Huawei's online store from 3 November but those who pre-order between 22 October and 2 November will also nab a pair of the company's FreeBuds 3 true wireless earphones (which have an RRP of £169.99).
