Whether you want privacy or to stream content that isn’t available in your country, a VPN or Virtual Private Network is an essential tool for browsing the web these days.

NordVPN leads the market with its user-friendly apps and an extensive list of features. And at the moment it's cheap, with 70% off the 3-year plan. And because it's the company's 8th birthday, it's celebrating by giving anyone who signs up to that plan before 10 March a free gift.

The gift can be one of four extra plans: 1 month, 1 year, 2 years or 3 years.

The discount knocks £234.51 off the regular three-year price of the VPN service (£331.25). That means you pay £96.74 up front (which works out at £2.68 per month).

Head to NordVPN’s website to see this deal, which is refundable for 30 days.

Nord sits at the top of our chart of the best VPNs around and there are a few reasons that make it our favourite. It's fast, easy to use, offers 5,687 servers across 60 countries, and works with Netflix, iPlayer, HBO GO, ShowTime, Hulu and a bunch of other streaming services.

If you’re itching to see what the latest streaming service is like, here's how to watch Disney+ in the UK using a VPN. Also see our article on how to watch BBC iPlayer abroad.

Nord offers a kill switch in its app, which automatically stops all internet activity if the VPN tunnel collapses. You can fine-tune which apps it should terminate, so not all apps have to lose their connection. Nord also offers a feature called Double VPN which routes your connection through two servers instead of just one.

Best VPN deals

Here are some other VPN deals available right now:

1. Ivacy five-year VPN subscription

From: Ivacy

Was: $597 ($9.95 per month - approx £7.29)

Now: $60 - approx £44 ($1 per month - approx 73p)  (91% off with IVACY20 coupon)

Ivacy's Deal Of The Year is one of the best around, knocking 87% off the usual monthly price.

It's a five-year subscription for which you'll pay $1.33 per month, which is about £1 if you're in the UK. That's an up-front payment of $80 (around £59) which is an absolute bargain.

However, it gets better! You can use the coupon code IVACY20 after selecting a payment method to get a further $20 off, making it just $1 per month, which is around 73p.

Ivacy offers a great service which supports P2P downloads, unblocks streaming services (including Netflix and Disney+) and, like any VPN service, gives you security when using public Wi-Fi and privacy when browsing the web.

It's one the cheapest VPN deals around and, as a bonus, you also get 2TB of encrypted cloud storage!

You really won't find a better VPN deal than this.

2. VyprVPN three-year subscription

From: VyprVPN

Was: $466.20 / £335.16

Now: $60 / £45  (87% off)

VyprVPN is currently offering a two-year subscription with 87% off, then giving you a whole free year after that. That's 36 months for just US$60 / £45.

If you're wondering why you should choose VyprVPN: it owns and manages all of its servers, and is a great choice if your priorities are security and privacy.

It also supports the fast WireGuard protocol and has 70 locations to choose from around the world.

You can read our VyprVPN review for more details.

4. Atlas VPN Premium 3-year subscription

From: Atlas VPN

Was: $359.64 - approx £255

Now: $50.04 - approx £35.50  (86% off)

Atlas VPN is a relatively new services, but it recently expanded from 18 to 32 locations including Japan, with Netflix support.

It doesn't tick as many boxes as NordVPN or Surfshark, but if you're just looking for the lowest monthly price, then this deal should be tempting, especially as Atlas VPN doesn't put any restrictions on the number of devices you can use with the service at the same time.

5. Private Internet Access two-year subscription

From: Private Internet Access

Was: $454.10 / £379.62

Now: $79 / £65  (83% off)

Private Internet Access is offering 83% off its three-year subscription.

The monthly price shown on PIA's site counts the extra two months not as free but as paid months. It's a cheeky way of making it look a bit cheaper than it really is.

But it's a good deal overall for this trusted service: it's one of few VPN services that have made the source code for its apps public so it can be scrutinised.

6. CyberGhost 26-month subscription

From: CyberGhost

Was: $337.74 / £339.77

Now: $58.50 / £50.85  (85% off)

CyberGhost is a great VPN service and its current offer is for a 26-month subscription. It's touted as a two-year deal with two months free, but click through and you'll see you're actually charged for all 26 months. Regardless, with 85% off, it's still a good deal.

It's not quite as good as VyprVPN's deal, which is for two years plus a whole free year, but it does offer a lot more servers and locations. And it's cheaper, which is great if you don't really want to commit for more than a year anyway.

Just bear in mind that you'll be billed the same amount annually if you let the subscription renew, which obviously is much worse value.

You'll find CyberGhost in our round-up of the best VPNs.

7. Hidden24 two-year subscription

From: Hidden24

Was: £119.76

Now: £78.96 (£3.29 per month)  (44% off)

Hidden24 is a VPN service with a difference: it doesn't require an app. It will suit anyone wanting a VPN for absolute privacy as it logs precisely nothing.

Your device will need to support a VPN connection natively, but Windows, Android, iOS and macOS all do.

Hidden24 is also a great option if you don't want to sign up for a long time: it's around half the cost of its rivals if you just need a VPN for a month.
