As if the Megapixel race wasn’t crazy enough already, new information suggests that Samsung is working on a whopping 150Mp camera sensor to put in a future smartphone.
With the Galaxy S20 Ultra featuring a 108Mp sensor, it’s no surprise that this new 150Mp beast will be limited to flagship devices. Xiaomi will reportedly be the first to launch a handset with the camera in Q4 this year.
Others including Oppo and Vivo will then take advantage of the module in Q1 of 2021. The crazy camara will be paired with the unannounced Qualcomm Snapdragon 875 chipset.
Although it’s possible the user might be allowed to take full-on 150Mp images, the Nonacell technology means that nine pixels will be combined into one to achieve higher light absorption. This will result in a 16Mp final image, up from 12Mp on the S20 Ultra.
It’s too early to say whether any of this is true but it doesn’t sound out of the question. Whether Samsung will use this same sensor in the Galaxy Note 20 or Galaxy S21 is another question. We wouldn’t be surprised if a version of it appears in at least one upcoming phone from Samsung.
