Various leaks and rumours have begun to appear about the expected Oppo Reno 8, which may launch later this year. Interestingly, it looks like it could occupy the space left by the un-released OnePlus 10, with a rather familiar looking design.
Here’s all we know so far about the Reno 8 series.
When will the Oppo Reno 8 be released?
Oppo has confirmed that the Reno 8 series will be unveiled in China on 23 May. We don't know if - or when - the phones will reach the rest of the world however.
How much will the Oppo Reno 8 cost?
Obviously, as we don’t have any confirmation of the devices' details, there’s no official pricing available. Again we look back to the previous incarnation for some clues. Here’s how they lined up:
- Reno 7 8GB/128GB – ¥2,699 (approx. £318/€374/$424)
- Reno 7 8GB/256GB – ¥2,999 (approx. £353/€415/$470)
- Reno 7 12GB/256GB – ¥3,299 (approx. £388/€457/$518)
Many of the rumours we’ve seen (and which you can read below) suggest that the Oppo Reno 8 could be the OnePlus 10 model that didn’t appear this year alongside the OnePlus 10 Pro. With that in mind, here are the prices for the OnePlus 9:
- OnePlus 9 8/128GB - £629/$729/€699
- OnePlus 9 12/256GB - £729/€799
There’s a bit of a difference in the price tiering between the OnePlus and the Reno 7, so our best estimate would be that the Reno 8 could sit somewhere between the two or veer closer to the more expensive OnePlus.
What specs and features will we see in the Oppo Reno 8?
There are usually multiple phones in the Reno range, and so far we've heard rumours about three: the Reno 8, Reno 8 Pro, and Reno 8 Lite.
Oppo Reno 8
There have been a few different rumours appearing on tech sites and social media feeds that show a potential device that looks a lot like the one people thought would be the OnePlus 10. This isn’t a far-fetched as it may sound, as Oppo and OnePlus are sister companies that have now merged their R&D departments to share resources. This has led to devices being released by one brand that look remarkably similar to those of the other.
With OnePlus strangely omitting a standard 10 model this year, going only with the 10 Pro and a rumoured OnePlus 10 Ultra on the way, it leaves open the possibility that Oppo might be the one to supply that particular area of the market.
This is certainly the way things are starting to appear, with Chinese tech tipster Digital Chat Station posting on Weibo an image of the device, plus some of the components it may contain.
As you can see, the reported Reno 8 looks remarkably similar to the OnePlus 10 Pro, so if the render is accurate then it certainly suggests that Oppo has picked up where OnePlus left off.
The post states that the Reno 8 will feature a 6.55in FHD+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate (just like the OnePlus 9), with a 50Mp IMX766 sensor in the main camera. In a later post the same leaker adds that it will feature another two rear lenses, at 8Mp and 2Mp (likely an ultrawide and either macro or depth sensor), along with a 4500mAh battery and 80W wired charging.
Perhaps most interestingly, Digital Chat Station also has something to say about the chipset. He predicts that the Reno 8 will feature the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 - likely making its debut here, since the chip hasn't actually been announced yet.
Oppo Reno 8 Pro
Digital Chat Station is also the source of most of what we know about the Pro version of the Reno 8, having shared a near-full spec sheet for the phone on Weibo - though we've also seen it pass through certification, confirming it's on the way at least.
DCS predicts a larger screen for the Pro, with a 6.7in FHD+120Hz OLED apparently on offer. Rival leaker Ice Universe has even shared an image of the display, and how it compares to previous Reno models.
It should be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 8100 Max together with Oppo's own MariSilicon X image processor - found on its flagship Find X5 Pro. Like the regular model, there'll be a 4500mAh battery and 80W charging.
Camera specs also match his leak for the regular model, with a 50Mp IMX766 triple camera - though in this case he also predicts a 32Mp IMX709 sensor on the selfie camera.
Finally, he says it'll be available in green, grey, and black, will be 7.34mm thick, and weigh just 183g.
Oppo Reno 8 Lite
We've only heard one reliable rumour about the Reno 8 Lite, but that single leak tells us a lot about the phone.
That's because this report from the usually reliable WinFuture claims that the 8 Lite is in fact the exact same phone as last year's 7 Lite 5G - which was in turn the same device as the Reno 7 Z 5G.
If that report is accurate, then the spec list becomes pretty clear. There'll be a Snapdragon 695 5G chipset, a 6.43in AMOLED screen, and a 64Mp rear camera.
The only real disappointment is that WinFuture reports that the phone will once again ship with Android 11 pre-installed, rather than the more recent Android 12.
Here are those likely specs in full:
- 6.43in AMOLED display
- Snapdragon 695 5G chipset
- 8GB RAM
- 128GB expandable storage
- Rear camera:
- 64Mp, f/1.7 main camera
- 2Mp macro camera
- 2Mp depth sensor
- 16Mp, f/2.4 selfie camera
- Bluetooth 5.1
- 4500mAh battery
- 33W wired charging
- Android 11
