It comes as no big surprise that Google has announced a new streaming HDMI dongle at its Launch Night In event. Here's everything you need to know about the Chromecast with Google TV.

It’s been a while since Google updated the Chromecast family and this latest model, codenamed Sabrina, comes with a remote control and interface based on Android TV. Google also announced the Pixel 5, Pixel 4a 5G and Nest Audio.

When does the Chromecast with Google TV come out?

There’s not long to wait for the new Chromecast as it has a release date of 15 October in the UK and Europe. It's on sale now in the US.

How much is the Chromecast with Google TV?

The Chromecast with Google TV has a price of £59/US$49 and you can pre-order or buy it now from Google’s store. You can also get it with six months of Netflix for £89/US$89.

It’ll also be available at Currys PC World, Argos, John Lewis and Tesco.

That price actually makes it cheaper than the £69/US$69 Chromecast Ultra, which will remain on sale (we’ll explain why below).

What are the Chromecast with Google TV specs?

You’ll notice that the Chromecast with Google TV has an oval shape made from nearly 50% recycled plastic and comes in three colours: Snow, Sunrise and Sky. But since it’s likely to sit out of view, there are more important things to talk about.

Remote control

Of course, one of the major features is the new remote control. Previously, Chromecasts relied on you finding content on other devices like a phone to then cast to the Chromecast.

Now, you can use it much more like a Roku or Apple TV thanks to the interface. The remote itself has Bluetooth, Infrared and an accelerometer in terms of connectivity.

It also has dedicated buttons for YouTube and Netflix along with a microphone so you can use the Google Assistant with your voice.

The remote has buttons you can use to switch on your TV as well as change source and adjust volume.

Google TV

Although it’s called Google TV, the Chromecast runs on Android TV and the interface means you can browse content on the big screen.

The device will bring together recommendations from your various subscription services like Netflix under the ‘For You’ tab. There’s also a Watchlist so you can bookmark things you want to come back to – this can also be added to from your phone or laptop.

Since it’s based on Android TV, there are over 6,500 apps you can download and enjoy. They include Disney+, My 5 and ITV.

Video and audio quality

As per the Chromecast Ultra, this new device offers up to 4K Ultra HD resolution at 60fps. It also supports Dolby Vision HDR. Google also said it supports HDR10+.

In terms of audio, the Chromecast with Google TV offers Dolby Atmos and ‘beyond 5.1’ surround sound. It can also be used as part of Google’s whole home audio if you have devices like Nest speakers.

Now, you’re probably wondering if the Chromecast with Google TV supports the firm’s Stadia game streaming service.

The short answer is no, and that’s why the Ultra remains on sale. It will arrive next year though and you can read more about this situation here.
