The world is constantly evolving and technology is moving rapidly along with it. ESET have been hard at work developing products to keep our devices safe, and their latest offering focuses on protecting an often overlooked part of our home network -- the Smart TV.
Smart TVs have become the central part of our home entertainment, and as everything from your watch to your kettle can be connected to the Wi-Fi, our homes are becoming more and more interconnected.
Making sure that nothing nasty gets into your network is now more important than ever, as once malware gets in, it will try it’s hardest to worm its way into everything connected to your home Wi-Fi.
What is ESET Smart TV Security?
ESET Smart TV Security is the first Android protection to market to be specifically designed for use on an Android Smart TV.
The package comes with ESET’s five star rated anti-malware protection, takes just a moment to set up, and is easy to use through its dedicated App.
The App is available on the Play Store and provides a variety of protection methods for your TV, including:
- Antivirus protection which safeguards your device against the ever-increasing levels of Android malware.
- Anti-ransomware technology to fight screen-locks, while the malware is uninstalled and cleared.
- Multi-device scanning which scans for malware on devices that are connected to the Smart TV.
- Anti-phishing to protect users from attempts to steal sensitive, personal information.
Why do I need protection for my Smart TV?
Android is a hugely popular platform for TVs, phones and laptops alike and with good reason. However, the more people using a platform and the more popular it gets, the more unscrupulous individuals will take notice and attempt to take advantage of the growing user base.
Any threat that can affect your Android phone is capable of attacking your Smart TV as well, as they’re all on the same platform. You wouldn’t browse the internet without an anti-virus on your laptop (we hope!) so why would you risk it with your Smart TV?
Once malware finds its way onto your network, it will promptly spread to every connected device. It will then start monitoring your activity, taking your personal information, locking your devices with ransom demands or even just corrupting the software on your device to make it inoperable.
One of the most common areas of attack for Smart TVs is through the Google Play Store itself. While Google does a great job of regulating the store and ensuring that the applications on offer are legitimate, there are always a few malicious ones that slip through the cracks.
Some may be masquerading as legitimate apps, and others may be promising a service just to get you to download and install them.
Doesn’t my router’s firewall protect me from external threats?
The firewall on your router protects you from ‘direct’ attacks and is very effective at doing this. However, the majority of malware enters devices through the user giving it permission, usually because it’s pretending to be something else.
If you think you’re downloading WhatsApp for example, and it asks for permission to access your contacts, your microphone and your camera – you probably wouldn’t think twice and just hit accept. Several apps ask for permission to access your device when you download them, and will not be able to function without this access, giving you an ultimatum - if you want to app to function you must allow it control. Most of them are perfectly safe and legitimate, but it just takes one malicious application to get inside to do real damage.
ESET Smart TV Security helps protect you from these threats so you don’t have to worry about it yourself. You’re safe in the knowledge that you have award-winning, tailored protection for your Smart TV. However, tech-savvy you are, we’re all going to make a mistake every now and again, and ESET provides a safety net for when that happens.
It’s hard to put a price on peace of mind, particularly when it’s your personal details and files that are at risk, but when you can cover your device for less than the cost of a cup of coffee each month – it certainly seems like a no-brainer.
ESET has been developing industry-leading IT security software for 30 years for both business and the home, combining state-of-the-art antivirus software with simple applications to ensure maximum protection and ease-of-use.
ESET’s software unobtrusively protects and monitors your device, updating its defences in real-time to ensure you’ve always got the latest protection. The individuals that create malware are getting better all the time, and ESET’s protection is always kept up-to-date by R&D facilities across the globe.
The first company to earn 100 Virus Bulletin VB100 awards, identifying every single ‘in-the-wild’ malware without interruption since 2003, ESET are leading the way in modern anti-virus protection - so it’s easy to understand why you would want them looking after your device.
