If you’ve decided to change your email address but are worried that some messages won’t be able to reach you at the new one, there’s always the option to set up a forwarding service from the old address. This should automatically send the emails that arrive there onto your new one.
Here we’ll explain how to redirect email to a new email address on Gmail, Outlook and iCloud Mail.
The method for setting up forwarding is practically the same on all of these services, so if your email provider isn’t on the list, try following the same steps and you should be successful, unless your old provider simply doesn’t support forwarding.
How to set up email forwarding in Gmail
- When Gmail is your old email address
When you want to switch email addresses, there’s no need to shut down or delete your old one as it could still come in handy in the future. But, if you want to have your messages sent to your new address, here’s how to configure Gmail to post them to you automatically.
Go to your web browser and log into Gmail. In the upper right-corner you’ll see the Settings icon (looks like a gear cog), so click this and select Show all settings from the menu that appears.
Click the tab marked Forwarding and POP/IMAP, then in the main pane you’ll see the Forwarding section at the top. You have two options here: you can either have all your emails redirected to the new address or you can set up a filter that will forward certain ones that meet your criteria. To set up the latter, click the creating a filter! option and enter the details you want Gmail to use when selecting emails to forward.
Now, click the Add a forwarding address button, enter your new email address, and Gmail will automatically begin sending any messages that arrive directly to your new account.
How to set up email forwarding on Outlook
- When Outlook is your old email address
To set up forwarding, open Outlook in a web browser on your PC or laptop. In the upper right-corner you’ll see the Settings icon (looks like a gear cog) so click this and then select Show all Outlook settings. In here you’ll see there’s a tab in the left-hand column for Forwarding.
Click this, click the Enable Forwarding box, then enter your new email address and click Save.
How to set up email forwarding on iCloud Mail
- When @iCloud or @me.com is your old email address
Open a web browser and log into iCloud. Select the Mail option, then at the bottom of the left-hand column you should see the gear icon that represents Settings. Click this and select Preferences.
In the box that appears, click the tickbox next to Forward my mail to: then enter your new address in the text field. Click Done to finish the process.
