Although smart displays with the Google Assistant started out without support for video streaming services, things have changed and now you can watch Disney Plus on your Nest Hub or similar.
It was previously possible to cast from the app, and we’ll show you how to do that, but now voice command functionality has been added so you can simply ask the device to play Mulan or whatever you’re watching.
Google Cast Disney+
If you want to cast what you’re watching to your smart display, then you’ll need to install the Disney+ app on your phone or tablet and log in (or sign up if you’re not a subscriber).
Once you’re up and running, make sure you’re on the same Wi-Fi network and use the Google Cast icon to select the display to watch on. Note that the list may well include your TV or other compatible devices.
Use voice command
Although casting has been an option for a while, Google has added the ability to conjure Disney+ content with the power of voice command. It says this is available on all Google Assistant-enabled smart displays.
This means you can say something like “Hey Google, play The Mandalorian on Disney Plus.” and completely forego your phone.
However, you’ll need to link your Disney+ account first. You’ll need to do this in the Google Home or Assistant app.
At the time of writing, it hasn’t rolled out but you’ll find the section by tapping the ‘+’ icon in the top-left corner, then selecting Video under the ‘Manage services’ section.
Note that playing content on a smart display will give you playback controls but you can’t browse content on the screen like you can on the app.
