Sony kicked off the PS5 Reveal event with a bang, showcasing Final Fantasy XVI for the first time. The announcement trailer gives us a good look at what to expect from the previously-rumoured game, not only in terms of themes, but actual gameplay – although captured on PC rather than the next-gen PS5, somewhat disappointingly.
Though there was no specific location mentioned, the lengthy announcement trailer gives us a good look at a variety of environments, from dusty canyons to vibrant forest, and a taste of the wildly varied enemies you’ll come across too.
It’s also where we get a look at the yet-unnamed protagonist, and the changing faces showcased at the end of the trailer suggests the game will take place over a long period of time. It’s not a concept unheard of in the Final Fantasy franchise of course, with a similar idea in place for the hugely successful Final Fantasy XV.
You can take a look at the gameplay trailer in all its glory below:
As confirmed in the trailer, Final Fantasy 16 is set to be a PlayStation exclusive on console – presumably both PS4 and PS5 considering there aren’t any PS5 exclusives for a few years – and it’ll be available on PC too. That’s bad news for Final Fantasy fans looking to pick up the Xbox Series X, but given Sony’s relationship with Square Enix around the Final Fantasy 7 remake, it’s not a huge surprise.
There’s no release date for Final Fantasy XV just yet, suggesting release could be some time away, but the inclusion of gameplay in the reveal trailer suggests it’s further along in development than some might’ve first imagined. Square Enix promises our next big look in 2021, so it’s not too far away, right?
