With the Sony Xperia 1 II marking the start of the year, many promptly expected a follow-up to 2019’s Xperia 5 in the latter half of 2020 and sure enough, the Sony Xperia 5 II has just been revealed.
As with the naming of the company’s other 2020 handsets, the Xperia 5 II gets its name in-part thanks to the company’s established Alpha camera series. The 5 II also packs a near-identical triple 12Mp camera setup to that of the one found on the Xperia 1 II, which is no bad thing.
The biggest talking point, however, is really the adoption of a 120Hz display – the first high refresh rate panel to be found on an Xperia phone.

Perhaps one of the Xperia 1 II’s most notable shortcomings was the absence of such a display, with Sony instead opting to grant the phone an admittedly-still-impressive 60Hz 21:9 4K HDR OLED screen. With the Xperia 5 II, Sony has reduced resolution to Full HD+ but upped the refresh rate to 120Hz (along with a touch response rate of 240Hz), granting users super-smooth visuals.
Like the company’s other 2020 flagship, the 5 II also boasts a standard 3.5mm headphone jack, stereo speakers and a myriad of advanced audio processing and upscaling technologies.
One of the purposes of the Xperia 5 II, aside from being a high-end device, is to shrink down the experience found on the Xperia 1 II. As such, it comes with the same Snapdragon 865 chipset, granting top-tier performance, but scales down the display size (and thus its overall footprint) from 6.5in to 6.1in.
