Animal Crossing: New Horizons has proven one of the most successful Nintendo Switch games yet, and today it got a little more political.
Democratic nominee Joe Biden’s campaign made four virtual yard signs available on the game on Tuesday for players to display in their villages and profess their political stance.
The four possible signs are “Team Joe”, “Joe” with the E in Pride colours, the Biden-Harris logo, and an image of Biden’s aviator sunglasses.
According to The New York Times, Republican nominee and current President Trump’s deputy national press secretary Samantha Zager’s response was: “This explains everything: Joe Biden thinks he’s campaigning for President of Animal Crossing from his basement. The Trump campaign will continue to spend its resources campaigning in the real world with real Americans,” going some way to imply that gamers aren’t “real”.
Biden’s director of digital partnerships Christian Tom called Animal Crossing “a dynamic, diverse, and powerful platform that brings communities together from across the world,” before adding “We’re already looking forward to rolling out more digital swag, voter education tools and organizing efforts on Animal Crossing and other platforms,” showing the Biden-Harris team’s dynamic approach to campaigning in the twenty-first century.
The signs will be given to gaming influencers who can then share them with any player who interacts with them. You can also download the signs via QR code or the Nintendo Switch Online app.
