Chrome is the world’s most popular web browser and Google regularly provides updates for both security and new features.
New versions fix problems and bring new capabilities with them. We show you the quick and easy way to make sure you’re running the latest version of Chrome on your PC, tablet or smartphone.
How to update Google Chrome on Android
If you have automatic app updates enabled on your Android device, which is quite likely, then Chrome will keep itself up to date without any need for you to intervene. But, if you want to check to see if there are any updates available, here’s what to do.
On your Android phone, open the Play Store app. In the top left corner, you’ll see three lines. Tap these then select My apps & games. The Updates tab should be highlighted, and underneath will be a list of any apps that have one available. So, scroll through them and see if Chrome is on the list. If so, tap the Update button next to it and Android will do the rest.
If you want all apps to look after themselves in the future, follow the steps laid out in how to update Android apps.
How to update Chrome on a PC
On Windows PCs, Macs and Chromebooks, Chrome usually updates each time the app is shut down and relaunched, but if you haven’t done this for a while then you may see a warning telling you this needs to happen.
To check, click the three dots in the top right corner of Chrome and see if there is a message that Chrome needs updating. Google uses a colour scheme to indicate how old the update is, with Green showing it’s only a maximum of two days since release, Orange indicates a maximum of four days, while Red means the update has been available for at least a week.
If a message is present, click Update Google Chrome then Relaunch when prompted. If there’s no message, then this means you’re on the latest version.
How to update Chrome on iPhone and iPad
Again, as with all the versions listed above, Chrome should keep itself updated on your Apple device. You can still check though, just to make sure. To do this, open the App Store and tap on your account profile picture in the top right corner.
Scroll down until you find the Available Updates section. In here you’ll see all of the apps with updates ready to download. If Chrome is on the list, tap the Update button to the right of its name and iOS will move the app to the latest version.
Of course, Chrome isn’t the only way to access the internet, so take a look at our recommendations for the best web browsers to see what the competition has to offer.
