Huawei has revealed the new MateBook X laptop for 2020 in its native China.
A successor to 2017’s original, the upgrades make it a worthy addition to to the company’s 2020 laptop portfolio.
In a video uploaded to Chinese social network Sina Weibo, the company teased its release with the caption ‘全新HUAWEI MateBook X 8月19日见’.
Some believed that was a hint that we could be getting a new MateBook X Pro, despite the 2020 model being released as recently as February.
An update to the regular model makes much more sense, particularly as its predecessor was Huawei’s first-ever laptop.
The new MateBook X isn’t a revolutionary upgrade, although it does come with a unique selling point – the world’s first Windows laptop with a pressure-sensitive trackpad.
It’s similar to the ‘Force Touch’ feature introduced on MacBooks in 2015, allowing you to perform various different operations depending on how much force you apply to the trackpad.
Despite being more affordable, many of the other specs are very similar to the 2020 MateBook X Pro. These include a 13in 3K (3000×2000) display, 10th-gen Intel Core processors and an extremely thin and light lightweight design. You’ll also get the extremely slim bezels and eye-catching Emerald Green colour option.
The processor is perhaps where you’ll notice the biggest difference, although even the two i5 models should be plenty powerful for most people.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, we only have Chinese pricing at this stage. Our best guess at how much it will cost in the UK and US come from a direct conversion, which isn’t always reliable:
- Intel Core i5, 8GB, 512GB – 7,999 yuan (approx £878/US$1,156)
- Intel Core i5, 16GB, 512GB – 8,999 yuan (approx £988/US$1,300)
- Intel Core i7, 16GB, 512GB – 9,999 yuan (approx £1,097/US$1,445)
We’d expect the device to be released globally at some point, although that may be a few months.
