Telegram, the WhatsApp rival chat app, has added one-on-one video calling functionality to its platform after celebrating its seventh anniversary.
Notably, group video calls are still not supported but Telegram said that it hopes to launch the functionality “in the coming months.”
Released in 2013 with a focus on security, Telegram has recently grown in popularity and added more modern chat features and aesthetic.
The addition of the video feature, which the company says is as secure as its chat service, surprises no one in its look and feel, echoing every other FaceTime-like service out there.
In a blog post, Telegram said:
“All video calls are protected with end-to-end encryption. To confirm your connection, compare the four emoji shown on-screen for you and your chat partner – if they match, your call is 100% secured by time-tested encryption also used in Telegram’s Secret Chats and Voice Calls. You can find more details on this page.”
