The live-action remake of Mulan has been delayed from its theatrical release numerous times due to the pandemic, but now Disney has settled on a compromise. Variety has reported that the company has decided to release the film on Disney Plus on 4 September 2020, and it will also come to any cinemas that are open by this date.
The catch? It will cost Disney+ subscribers an additional price of $29.99 (around £23) to stream. At the time of writing, only US pricing has been confirmed – so we don’t know whether the UK cost will be the equivalent of the US, or even more expensive.
This is the first film to be available for a premium on the service, and Disney CEO Bob Chapek is considering this a ‘one-off’ release rather than a new business model for the streaming platform. However, it could be an indication to what Disney will do for other big upcoming titles such as Black Widow – the first film in Marvel Phase 4.
Disney+ has re-homed other early releases such as Artemis Fowl and Hamilton, but neither of these cost anything extra to stream. However, seeing as Mulan has an alleged budget of $200+ million, it’s not surprising that the company is pricing the film so high.
Mulan will be available to stream in all the countries that Disney+ is in. This includes the UK, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Germany, Italy and more. Countries who don’t have Disney+ will still be able to catch the film in cinemas – providing that their theatres are actually open during the pandemic.
