Twitch, the popular video and gaming streaming service, has temporarily suspended President Donald Trump’s campaign account.
Twitch spokesperson Brielle Villablanca told CNN that, “In line with our policies, President Trump’s channel has been issued a temporary suspension from Twitch for comments made on stream, and the offending content has been removed.”
The company said that “hateful content is not allowed” on its platform and that the offended videos on the account included Trump’s 2016 rally where he labelled Mexicans as rapists and criminals. It also said that a recent Tulsa rally where Trump referred to “a very tough young hombre” in the context of a man committing a crime.
In labelling the move a temporary suspension, it appears Twitch is open to resting the ban if the content is removed and the rest of the videos adhere to its guidelines.
Other online platforms have stepped up similar bans in recent weeks after mounting pressure to take action against those, particularly with massive followings, who spread hate speech. Twitter has labelled some of Trump’s tweets as fact-checked, while Snapchat has stopped promoting his account.
Twitch has recently permanently banned popular streamer Dr Disrespect for violating its rules. The decision came three months after a two-year mega deal, though Twitch has declined to say why it has made the decision.
