In a slightly tenuous Father’s Day link, Snapchat has added two new filters that add or remove beards.
With people in lockdown and unable to get to the barber for a professional look at their hair, Snapchat hopes that the filters will provide a bit of fun for those who have struggled to grow a full beard or those who want to see what they look like clean shaven.
If you’re clean shaven the app lets you add a full set of face furniture while another filter find if you have a beard and removes it live in the filter for you to check out and send along to your friends to see if you can trick them into thinking you’ve shaved it all off.
The addition comes after May’s Damien Hirst collaboration, and the more serious move Snapchat took to stop promoting Donald Trump’s official account after his tweets that were seen to glorify violence.
Parent company Snap also this week announced its plans to open its own app store as it bets on the AR revolution. Snap has always called itself a camera company, and its roadmap keeps the smartphone camera at the centre of all its business decisions. It has worked so far, beards and all.
