Samsung is rumoured to be readying its next Unpacked hardware event for 5 August where it is expected to launch the Galaxy Note 20 phones alongside a new Galaxy Fold device (via TechRadar). The expert and reliable Samsung leaker Ice Universe posted on Weibo about the date, which is backed up by a report from Korean site Dong-A Ilbo.
It’s unclear whether Samsung plans for this to be a media event or if the ongoing coronavirus pandemic will mean it’s a virtual one.
As well as the new Note and Fold phones, Ice Universe suggests it’ll be a bumper Unpacked that will also see the release of a 5G Z Flip, Galaxy Tab S7 range and a long-awaited Galaxy Watch 2.
We’ve always loved the Note range here at Tech Advisor and the Note 10 line was no different, despite losing the headphone jack. We fully expect the Note 20 or Note 20 Ultra (if Samsung uses the branding from the S20 line) to boast a 120Hz refresh rate and mouth watering specs.
The industrial design of the Note 10 was preferred by some to the curvy S line, but the Note 10 only had a 60Hz screen and slightly under-par battery life. That said, its cameras were top draw.
The Galaxy Fold 2 is shrouded in a little more mystery. Whatever form it takes, we hope it costs less – but Samsung will simply be hoping for a smoother launch after it had to cancel the first Fold’s after journalist’s review units started breaking.
As well as a potential 5G version of the Z Flip (the 4G version of which was one of our favourite phones so far this year) we could see the Galaxy Watch 2. Samsung’s smartwatch strategy is a little scattershot, as the first Watch came out in 2018 alongside the Note 9 and has been followed up with two Galaxy Watch Active models.
If Samsung releases a new Galaxy Watch we’d hope for a new design language and features that put it alongside the industry’s runaway leader, the Apple Watch.
