Xiaomi, the popular Chinese smartphone and gadget manufacturer has a subsidiary called Huami that produces smartwatches under the Amazfit brand. We’ve reviewed a few and some are pretty good.
Now, Huami is gearing up to release the Amazfit Ares after teasing it on the company’s Weibo page (via TechRadar).
The Ares has a bit of a classic Casio G-Shock vibe to its octagonal stylings. Perhaps that means it’ll be a rugged or outdoors smartwatch, an area of the market currently owned by specialist brands like Garmin and Polar.

The Chinese poster, below, talks of 70 sports modes and professional sport analysis, so it looks like it could well be a worthy addition to the outdoor pursuits wearables that we sometimes forget about when faced with shiny new Apple or Samsung smartwatches. With Huami’s track record for reasonable pricing, the Ares could prove to be a canny buy if it packs in accurate GPS.
It looks like the launch is on 19 May. We’ll keep an eye out for more news on the Ares and hopefully get to review it when it drops.
