Apple has confirmed that its annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) will run from 22-26 June will be accessible for all developers for free via the Apple Developer app or the Apple Developer site.
Thanks to the ongoing global coronavirus pandemic, Apple has cancelled the physical aspect of WWDC and moved it to late June. The conference normally takes part earlier in the month.
A positive side to this virtual set up means more developers can attend. Due to limited availability and capacity at the physical event, tickets are usually distributed randomly to developers who apply for tickets.
“WWDC20 will be our biggest yet, bringing together our global developer community of more than 23 million in an unprecedented way for a week in June to learn about the future of Apple platforms,” said Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing.
“We can’t wait to meet online in June with the global developer community and share with them all of the new tools we’ve been working on to help them create even more incredible apps and services. We look forward to sharing more details about WWDC20 with everyone as we get closer to this exciting event.”
Even if 23 million developers don’t actually tune in, it shows how many more people Apple can directly aim to interact with in a virtual event. If successful, it could potentially influence how Apple decides to continue WWDC in the future.
Apple also announced Swift Student Challenge, a coding competition for students where entrants can create their own Swift playground interactive scene. Winners will get exclusive WWDC 2020 merchandise as their prize.
