OnePlus will announce its OnePlus 8 series during an online launch on 14 April, but until then it has teased the design of the devices with a video and blog post.
CEO Pete Lau said in the post:
In the OnePlus 8 series, we’ve managed to achieve the fifth generation of matte-frosted glass using a new crafting process … Thanks to the higher degree of haze achieved, we were able to produce an unprecedented smooth and fine texture on the fifth-generation frosted glass … The OnePlus 8 series will also feature a thinner profile and a lighter weight, so that the phone can sit ergonomically and comfortably in the palm of your hand”.
The latter sounds good, as we loved the OnePlus 7 Pro but it was a bit of a chonker.
OnePlus first used a frosted glass technique on the back of the OnePlus 6 midnight black, having previously used metal for the back of the phone. Since then, other OnePlus phones have had frosted glass backs, but hbave never supported wireless charging (that requires glass to work). That is set to change in the high-end OnePlus 8 Pro, according to rumours.
The video shared teases the Glacial Green colour that will be used on one or both of the phones, which should both have the Snapdragon 865 chipset and slick design. Despite some similarities between the phones it seems that the Pro model will include wireless charging and waterproofing and some other spec bumps that will raise the price of the high-end OnePlus phone to the same as the rival brands it once so significantly undercut.
