OnePlus has announced that the upcoming OnePlus 8 Pro will have fast 30W wireless charging, promising 50 per cent power from a 30 minute charge.
The company made the announcement via a blog post and press release, the latter of which states that the feature will appear on “the ultra-premium flagship phone in the new OnePlus 8 series”.
While the name of the device isn’t official, rumours make it pretty clear that this is the OnePlus 8 Pro, meaning the cheaper OnePlus 8 will forgo wireless charging as a cost saving measure.
OnePlus introduced the slogan ‘a day’s power in half an hour’ in 2016 with the OnePlus 3T with its Dash Charge feature, which was 20W. Since then the branding has changed to Warp Charge, and wired charging is up to 30W on several models.
The news means that the 8 Pro will very likely be a phone as expensive as some of its industry rivals, potentially also adding an official IP rating, marking a sea change for OnePlus where it will position itself as a premium smartphone option rather than an ‘affordable’ challenger brand.
Then again, it seems as though the cheaper OnePlus 8 might fill that void.
“We design our products to solve the problems our users face,” said OnePlus Founder and CEO Pete Lau. “New technologies are only implemented after they’ve been thoroughly tested and meet our standards for a top-quality user experience. After three years of extensive R&D, we are excited to finally bring one of the world’s fastest wireless charging technologies to our users.”
