OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has posted a blog detailing more about the specs of the upcoming OnePlus 8 series of phones that will launch on 14 April.
In keeping with the company’s recent launch strategy of leaking details itself prior to the official announcement of the devices, he blogged about the chip, RAM and storage that presumably both the rumoured OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro will have.
The phones will have the latest high end Qualcomm Snapdragon 865, a chip that comes with 5G integrated. Lau says this means the phones will get a 25% boost in CPU performance, 25% increase in GPU rendering times and boast 25% better power efficiency.
The phones will also be the first OnePlus devices to use LPDDR5 RAM, a faster RAM that Lau says offers a 45% lower power consumption than the 7T phones – that’s a big claim.
Finally, he confirmed that the phones will use UFS 3.0 flash storage, which is not unusual for premium smartphones, but said that OnePlus has added “Turbo Write” and “Performance Booster” that appear to be the company’s own branded features:
“Turbo Write uses the upper section of the ROM’s storage as a high-speed read/write interval. Here, in theory, each read/write will enter this high-speed buffer, and then proceed to the next command of data transfer.
“In addition, HPB (Host Performance Booster) can further improve the random read performance after extended use.”
Lau’s post finishes by lauding the efforts of the OnePlus software team who he says are “maximizing the performance of the hardware combination by only adding the features that truly matter to you, making an even better flagship smartphone experience.”
It looks like there will be a lot of similarities between the two models, with the 8 Pro rumoured to be a larger device with IP68 and wireless charging, potentially features that will make it the more expensive of the two.
