Apple has bought the popular weather app Dark Sky with a clear initiative to improve its own weather app for iPhone, iPad and Mac. It means that the Dark Sky Android app is no longer available to download and will shut down on 1 July.
The WearOS app will also stop working then, and anyone still subscribed will receive a refund.
In a blog post, Dark Sky co-founder Adam Grossman also revealed that the API service won’t be accepting new customers but will continue its existing service until the end of 2021. For the time being, people can download the iOS app as normal.
“Our goal has always been to provide the world with the best weather information possible, to help as many people as we can stay dry and safe, and to do so in a way that respects your privacy,” said Grossman.
“There is no better place to accomplish these goals than at Apple. We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to reach far more people, with far more impact, than we ever could alone.”
Dark Sky has been one of the best and most downloaded weather apps for iOS and Android in recent years thanks to its hyperlocal radar information that delivers a very personalised experience dependent on location. Being able to set tailored rain alerts is a neat feature that we’ve always liked at Tech Advisor.
Now, Apple is clearly flexing with this acquisition in order to improve its own weather app which has barely changed over the last several iOS iterations.
