Xiaomi has unveiled the Redmi K30 Pro, a high spec Android flagship with a stunningly low price. The phone will sell in China from 2999 yuan, which at the time of writing is £360/$425.
For that price you get 6GB RAM and 128GB storage in a phone that packs in the 5G Snapdragon 865 chipset, quad rear cameras and a 6.67in 1080p OLED display. You can pay a little more for a version with 8GB RAM.
The comparable LG V60 has just launched in the US for $799, while Samsung’s cheapest Galaxy S20 phone is $999. Both phones have the same processor as the K30 Pro.
The K30 Pro has a 20Mp pop-up camera akin to the K20 Pro, the phone that was released as the Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro in Europe. If the K30 Pro ever hits European shores, it is likely to undergo the same rebranding. Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro, anyone?
Redmi phones have a large audience in China but also in India, where smartphone companies are aggressively competing with top specs at sometimes insanely low prices. The K30 Pro is set to impress with 8K video recording, a headphone jack, 4,700mAh battery, fast charging, NFC and IP53 water resistance. In terms of flagship phone features, it only appears to be missing wireless charging.
Both models have a 64Mp main, 13Mp ultra-wide, 2Mp macro and 5Mp telephoto camera set up on the back in a circular module. According to The Verge, there is also a ‘zoom edition’ of the phone that swaps out the telephoto lens of the standard version for one that can do 30x hybrid zoom. It’ll sell for 3999 yuan (£479/$565) with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage.
