This is reportedly the Fitbit Charge 4

Fitbit was reported to have been acquired by Google back in November. The deal hasn’t gone through yet, but it appears Fitbit will plough on and release the Charge 4, a new band in its popular Charge line of fitness trackers.

According to leaks from 9to5Google, it looks almost identical to the Charge 3 released in October 2018.

The publication points out that the Fitbit Versa 2 was almost physically identical to the first Versa, so perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised about Fitbit’s strategy here. The company simply wants to, hopefully, add more features to an already great design and just update the line up for new customers. Or something.

The report suggests new features will include NFC for mobile payments rather than keep such a feature reserved for Fitbit’s odd, more expensive special edition bands The Charge 4 might also include an always on display, a feature seen on the Versa 2, meaning users won’t have to raise their wrists to activate the screen.

The tracker will also likely come in the black and purple colourways displayed in the leaked image.

In a reaction statement to 9to5Google, Fitbit said:

“We appreciate the interest and excitement around our products. We are constantly working on new health and fitness devices to help people live healthier lives. We don’t have news to share at this time, but you’ll be amongst the first to know when we do.”

Fitbit once led the excitement in fitness tracking with its low cost, fun to use bands. But in the past few years its brand value has dropped somewhat as more people bought into the Apple Watch ecosystem. This led to the company’s planned acquisition by Google where we might even see the Fitbit brand disappear entirely.

If the Charge 4 is the last Fitbit, it looks like the company will be going out with a whimper.
