Lebara UK has announced a cut-price £5 per month SIM-only plan that offers 2GB data, 1000 UK minutes, 1000 UK texts and 100 international minutes. It’s also attractively a 30-day rolling deal, so you don’t have to sign up for 12 or 24 months and can change the plan you’re on, much like with giffgaff.
Lebara and giffgaff are examples of mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) that pay to use spectrum from the major operators and can often undercut their prices.
This new Lebara £5 plan is better than the closest £6 deal from giffgaff, which uses O2’s network and only brings you 300 minutes, 500 texts and 500MB data. It’s also better than Smarty‘s £6 plan, which uses Three’s network.
Lebara’s offer of 100 international minutes is also unique at this price point. The MVNO piggybacks Vodafone’s 4G network and has long been associated with international calling cards bought on a pay and go basis from the high street. But it has expanded to compete with the lowest priced SIM deals in the UK, bringing staunch competition where the market needs it most.
“We know that finding the right mobile phone deal for you can be a daunting experience especially when you are trying to find the right balance between value, experience and flexibility. It doesn’t have to be. Now with Lebara, you get it all for just a fiver,” said Rajesh Dongre, Commercial Director for Lebara UK.
The new £5 SIM offer also lets you use your device as a mobile hotspot, which not all cheaper SIM plans allow.
