We reported Apple is considering using mini LED screens in its products in 2020 and now that has been backed up by another report from the analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. 9to5Mac reported on Kuo’s latest report that claims Apple will debut mini LED displays in 2020’s 12.9in iPad Pro and an updated 16in MacBook Pro.
This suggests Apple may not put the tech in the smaller 11in iPad Pro or the 13in MacBook Pro. This might be to keep the price low on smaller-screened LCD version of the products, or it could simply be that Kuo only has details on the products he is citing.
Mini LED is similar to OLED tech that is seen in more premium smartphone screens such as the Galaxy S10, iPhone 11 Pro and OnePlus 7T. Older and cheaper phones still use the less vibrant LCD, such as the iPhone 11.
The Kuo report says Apple will release 4-6 mini LED products over the next 2-3 years, meaning Apple might experiment with the tech before making it widespread. Mini LED is said to offer higher dynamic range, better contrast, better brightness control and can be shipped in thin panels. Also, they supposedly do not suffer from the ghosting ‘burn in’ of some OLED panels.
