Amazon Music has been made available on Apple TV, continuing the release of services onto hardware manufactured by a rival brand. Amazon Music is a direct competitor to Apple Music.
For a while companies like Amazon, Apple and Google played hardball by blocking each other’s services – you couldn’t stream YouTube on an Echo Show until Amazon relented, and you still can’t easily buy a Google Home from Amazon given the latter’s Echo is a direct rival.
But you can download Apple Music on an Android device and Amazon Music on iOS, so Amazon Music being available on Apple TV makes sense. It’s just all a bit confusing, and in this particular case a niche offer. We can’t imagine that many people with an Apple TV were pining for Amazon Music to finally be available on the platform – Apple Music and Spotify are still the music streaming platforms of choice for most.
You need to be running tvOS 12.0 or later on an Apple TV HD or TV 4K to access the app if you were indeed one of the few people holding out for this news. Most people won’t be looking to play music through their TV unless they’ve got a pretty decent sound system hooked up to it.
The app is available on Apple TV in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Canada, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Mexico, Japan, and India.
