Instagram has confirmed it is removing the Following tab in its mobile app that allows you to see what your friends are interacting with on the service. Until now you’ve been able to tap the heart icon to see your own feed of notifications, but there’s also been a Following tab on the left for everyone else in your network.
If you love a good stalk, it’s about to go away. Instagram
confirmed the change to BuzzFeed.
We can’t say we spend a lot of time in the tab and it always appeared to be there simply because Instagram could mesh all the data points together from your network of follows to show you something tangible. But it’s not as good as the discover tab, and if you thought the normal feed itself was a black hole of swiping and scrolling, it might be best you don’t look at the Following tab.
If you like what you see, it’s about to disappear. It’s in line with Instagram’s decision to remove the number of likes next to posts – you can now only view your own post likes. It’s meant to help with our mental health, and we are all for that.
Vishal Shah, Instagram’s head of product, told BuzzFeed News, “People didn’t always know that their activity is surfacing,” Shah said. “So you have a case where it’s not serving the use case you built it for, but it’s also causing people to be surprised when their activity is showing up.”
What he is alluding to is the fact that some people like things on Instagram that their significant others wouldn’t necessarily be pleased about and don’t always realise that the Following tab has been dobbing them in all this time. Rein it in, people.
Instagram has got your back though. The Following tab is due for the cut in the next few days.
