Oppo VP Shen Yiren has confirmed on Chinese social media site Weibo that the company is working on its first smartwatch.
The post confirmed the watch is set for release in 2020 but other details are scant, including whether this will be a global release or what software the product will run.
Oppo has long been a bestselling influential smartphone brand in Asia and Australasia but only in the past year has it officially launched sales in the UK and Europe with eye catching phones like the Find X and Reno 10x Zoom. It also used to make great headphones that unfortunately it stopped producing last year.
But Yiren added in his post that Oppo would be turning out some noise-cancelling headphones this year. We hope they are a viable competitor to the over-ear dominance of Sony and Bose, while hopefully costing less.
An Oppo smartwatch would have to do a lot to move the wearable needle in 2020 though despite the excellent quality of many of Oppo’s phones. The watch would likely run Wear OS, Google’s struggling operating system for smartwatches – it means aside from hardware, many Android based watches have identical software and bad battery life.
It’s possible that Oppo has developed its own software for its upcoming wearable like Samsung has with Tizen and Huawei’s own on its Watch GT.
