Computex 2019: What to expect

Computex is one of the world’s largest technology shows and there will be plenty of interesting stuff announced. Here we round up what to expect from some of the biggest names including AMD and Asus.

Although the likes of CES and MWC hit the headlines a little more, Computex is still a great show and one for those into PCs, laptops and components.

When is Computex 2019?

The show takes place in Taipei, Taiwan between 28 May and 1 June.

Let’s break down the show by brand.

AMD

Computex will actually kick-off with a keynote from AMD on 27 May where the firm’s CEO, Dr Lisa Su, will take to the stage. You can watch the live stream here.

This hasn’t happened before so it’s quite a big deal. AMD will be sharing “new details of upcoming products” which will reportedly headline with AMD 3000 silicon.

You’ll want to tune in for details on AMD Ryzen 3000 processors which will arrive in Q3 on a 7nm process. We can also expect X570 motherboards.

Although you might be excited for AMD Navi 10, graphics is less likely to be on the agenda with the Next Horizon Gaming event happening at E3 barely a week later.

Asus

Computex is a big deal for Asus with its headquarters a stone’s throw away from the show itself.

Things have been a little quiet from the firm since CES where is unveiled the ZenBook S13 and ROG Mothership among other devices. However, that might be a good sign and there’s plenty been saved for Computex.

New laptops and various components are almost certain, but we’re hoping for a new smartphone.

The Asus ROG Phone was announced at the show last year so we have our fingers crossed for a ROG Phone 22 for 2019. After all, a 12 month refresh cycle is perfect for most phones.

Intel

Although AMD might be the ‘headline act’, Intel will still be at Computex with Gregory Bryant, senior VP of client computing, hosting a keynote on 28 May.

Project Athena is likely to be high on the schedule. It’s Intel’s project for creating a new class of laptop thanks to much smaller components such as Lackfield motherboards. Previewed at CES, a hybrid CPU will be just 12mm2 including Foveros 3D packaging technology.

There could also be 10nm Ice Lake chips, although these are far more likely to be mobile chips rather than desktop.

The desktop side of things could bring along news of Cascade Lake X processors. These will be built upon the same 14nm process and LGA 2066 socket as its predecessor, Skylake X.

The best of the rest

For us, those are the three big names to watch out for at Computex but there will be a lot more at the show. Brands like Microsoft and Nvidia will be there but the former just had its Build conference and Nvidia is likely to hold back on anything major until at least E3.

Tech Advisor will be in Taipei on the hunt for the latest laptops from the likes of MSI, Gigabyte and more. Those interested can also expect Corsair to announce next-gen LEDs and memory to arrive at 5000Mhz.
