Amazon Restaurants, the company’s restaurant delivery service, has been discontinued in the US as of 24 June, after leaving the UK in 2018.
The service launched in Seattle in 2015 and expanded into the UK market in 2016 but struggled against rivals Deliveroo and Uber Eats. In May, Amazon opted to invest heavily in Deliveroo instead.
What was Amazon Restaurants?
Amazon Restaurants began as a spin-off from Prime Now, letting you order cooked food to be delivered within an hour. If you’ve ever used Deliveroo or similar services, you’ll know what to expect: you could browse a variety of restaurants, choose from traditional takeaways to sit-down restaurants that wouldn’t normally deliver, and have a meal delivered straight to your door.
There were two caveats to the service. First up, like many of Amazon’s services, you needed to be a Prime member. Second, it was not available everywhere.
Which cities did Amazon Restaurants serve?
In the UK the list was quite short, serving mostly London. Amazon Restaurants in the US served the following cities:
