It seems as if the open source media player has come full circle, as Kodi (formerly known as Xbox Media Centre) is now available to download on the Xbox One, bringing the plethora of add-ons Kodi is famed for to Microsoft’s latest console. However, it’s early days and as such, there are a few teething issues.
Don’t worry too much; here, we explain the state of Kodi’s Xbox One port and how you can install Kodi on your Xbox One.
Kodi on Xbox One: Issues and restrictions
Before we show you how to install Kodi on your Xbox One, we thought we’d first mention a couple of limitations of the software, as it won’t perform in exactly the same way as it does on other devices.
The Kodi app is now a Universal Windows App (which we’ll come to below) and while that means it’s now available on a wide range of Windows platforms, there are restrictions on how it can be used on Microsoft’s console.
Firstly, the app will have no access to the Blu-ray drive, any attached storage devices or even via your local network if you’re not using NFS:// shares – if you were looking to stream local content via Kodi, you’re out of luck.
If, after reading all that, you’re still interested in installing Kodi on your Xbox One, carry on reading to find out how.
How to install Kodi on Xbox One
As mentioned above, Kodi is now officially a Universal Windows App, making it available not only for Windows 10 but Windows 10 Mobile, Xbox One and even HoloLens via the Microsoft Store.
This makes it incredibly easy to download and install as unlike with the likes of the Apple TV and Amazon’s Fire TV Stick, you don’t have to follow a complex workaround to side-load the media player onto the OS.
What does that mean for you at home? It’s simple to get Kodi onto your Xbox One.
- Turn on your Xbox One and make sure it’s connected to the internet
- Log in to your Live account and open the Microsoft Store
- Search for Kodi in the Search menu
- Select Install and the software will be downloaded
Once the app has been downloaded and installed, click on the icon in the Games & Apps menu to access the media player. Simple really!
