Tracking people on WhatsApp… sounds a bit creepy, right? But it’s really not when you consider that for the chat app’s new Live Location feature to work the person you’re tracking must give their permission.
If you’re trying to keep tabs on a group of friends all en route for a meet-up, or you want an easy way to keep tabs on your teenager who has been expressly told not to hang around the town centre, it could come in rather handy.
WhatsApp Live Location is a new feature rolling out over the next few weeks, so if this doesn’t work for you right now then you should check you’ve got the latest version of the app. If you have and it still doesn’t work you may simply have to wait a little longer for the feature to roll out to your device.
How to use WhatsApp Live Location
1. Open WhatsApp, tap the new message icon and select the contact with whom you wish to share your location. This also works within groups. Tap the paperclip icon in the ‘Type a message’ field and choose Location.
If you’ve never shared your location on WhatsApp before, you will be prompted to allow WhatsApp access to your location data. Click Continue or Allow to any prompts that pop up.
2. You should see a map with the option to ‘Share live location’ below. Tap this.
WhatsApp will warn that ‘Participants in this chat will see your location in real time. This feature shares your location for the duration you choose even if you’re not using the app. You can stop sharing at any time’. Click Continue.
3. Select how long you wish to share your location with that person – 15 minutes, 1 hour or 8 hours. You can add a comment if you like, then tap Send.
4. Your contact will now receive a message with a map that shows your current location, which will continually update during the time period you specified in step 3. At any time you can stop sharing your location by tapping ‘Stop sharing’ in the chat thread.
