High speed internet has well and truly changed how we consume content, whether we’re watching a film in 4K or downloading a brand new game at midnight on launch day. Here we take a look at PlayStation Vue looking at the plans, channels and devices as well as whether it will launch in the UK. See also: Best media streamers 2016/2017.
What is PlayStation Vue?
In simple terms, PlayStation Vue is a live TV streaming service wherein you don’t need a cable or satellite subscription. It offers viewers live and on-demand content such as TV shows, movies and sports so is similar to the likes of Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Sky Now TV. PlayStation Vue is priced at $29.99 per month with plans up to Ultra costing $74.99 but you can do a free trial.
“With powerful features that allow you to save thousands of hours of your favorite shows without recording conflicts, and Premium channels that can be purchased individually or with a multi-channel plan, TV has never been the same. No annual contracts, no conflicts, no problems,” says the firm.
Where is PlayStation Vue available and will it launch in the UK?
At the moment, PlayStation Vue is a US-only service and is available in all 50 United States. This is primarily because of the network partners it has providing channels that make up the package. It launched in March 2016.
With it being available across the pond for the most part of a year, will it launch in the UK?
As is stands, a UK launch seems unlikely considering it’s centred around US providers such as AMC, CBS, Fox and NBC Universal. That doesn’t completely rule it out though, it would just require some UK partners or those US ones allowing content to be streaming to the UK – although the latter is unlikely.
If we look at Netflix for comparison is started streaming in the US in 2007 followed by a UK launch in 2012. That was the early days of internet streaming so if Sony is looking at a PlayStation UK launch then it shouldn’t take anywhere near five years to organise.
We reached out to Sony on the subject of PlayStation Vue UK but it declined to comment.
