The Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus joined Samsung’s constellation of super smartphones in 2018. Now with the release of the Galaxy S20, you’re like to find deals on the S9, which means you’ll probably want to keep it safe.
Here are some of the cases we think would make a great companion to the S9 and the S9+. If you want even more protection, check out our list of the best Galaxy S9 screen protectors. We’ve separately rounded up the best Galaxy S9 battery cases too, if you want to keep your Galaxy phone juiced.
See our review of the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus.
We haven’t tried all these cases first hand, but we have seen quality cases from many of these trusted brands for other phones.
Samsung Galaxy S9 Clear View Case
If you’re looking for a case that’s sure to fit, you can rely on an official case from Samsung itself. The Clear View case is a standard offering from Samsung on many of the Galaxy phones, such as the Galaxy S8, S8+ and Galaxy Note 8.
The translucent front cover allows you to view notifications while also preserving some touch functionalities when still closed. For instance, you can touch to answer or reject calls – which is a handy feature to have.
Available on Amazon for £26/US$49.95. The S9 Plus version is available for around £24/US$24 on Amazon.
Samsung Galaxy S9 Hyperknit Case
We’re also excited about the Hyperknit case from Samsung, which is new to the company’s line of in-house cases.
The Hyperknit offers a fabric-textured surface (similar to the fabric on your trainers or running shoes) and promises edge-to-edge protection. This lightweight case is also compatible with Qi wireless charging.
Available for the S9 for around £3/US$6.39. Get it for the S9 Plus for around £3/ US$8.
Incipio Dualpro for Galaxy S9
This unassuming case for the S9 is one of our favourites thanks to its good build and subtle protection.
The soft touch finish makes a big difference to every day use and while it’s a larger case than some might want, its dual layer construction is drop tested to 10ft.
The inner bumper is a flexible rubber while the outer shell is a rigid shell meaning you don’t have to treat your phone like a china doll.
Pick it up for the S9 for around £5/ US$5 from Amazon. Available here for the S9 Plus (£28.94/ US$6).
Poetic Nubuck Case for Galaxy S9
The Nubuck is a good case for the Galaxy S9 if you’re on a budget. It’s durable, lightweight and comes with a slot on the back to store a credit card.
There’s a pull tab anchored inside the slot to help retrieve the card with ease, but we found this slightly fiddly. This might just be because the case is fresh out the box – we expect the faux-leather pocket should stretch over use.
Available from Amazon for £8.95/US$12.95 or directly from Poetic Cases. See other Poetic cases for the S9 here.
The S9 Plus version is available for around £8.95/US$12.95.
Poetic Revolution Case for Galaxy S9
We’ve included this second case from Poetic because it is significantly different from the previous one – the main difference being that it includes a snap on screen protector (with curved edges).
Note that the screen protector is not tempered glass, so it does feel and flex like the plastic that it is. If you’re looking for screen protectors, check out our designated round up of the best Galaxy S9 screen protectors.
The Poetic Revolution, compared to the Nubuck, is much more rugged with its front and back protection. We also liked that the edges are rubberised for additional grip. It’s also compatible with wireless charging.
It’s a strong case well worth its price. Pick it up directly from Poetic for $16.95 (around £13) or from Amazon for £16.69 /US$9.95.
It’s available for the S9 Plus too (for $18.95, around £14.58), and in blue and pink (if you prefer something more vibrant).
Proporta Samsung Galaxy S9 Carbon Opus Folio Case
Another strong offering from Proporta is the Carbon Opus folio case. This offers the additional protection of a front flap over the screen – which also folds into a stand.
It’s made of genuine nappa leather and has been tested to withstand the blast from a shotgun (though we wouldn’t put this to the test ourselves). We did find the weighted protective front flap makes the case slightly heavy, but this adds to the overall protective feel of the case.
We’re also happy to see that the case allows wireless charging as well. And for those who want to use their phones hands-free while driving, the case is magnetic and compatible with car-mounts. You can see our round up of the best car mounts and holders here.
Pick it up from Amazon for £30/US$39.95, or directly from Proporta for £24.95/ US$29.95.
Peel Super Thin Case for Samsung Galaxy S9
The Peel Super Thin case is indeed super thin at 0.35mm. Designed to keep the focus on S9’s original design, the case doesn’t even have any additional branding to distract you with.
Application is easy: simply slide and snap your phone into place. Keep in mind, while it will protect your phone from day-to-day scuffs and scratches, it’s no rugged case.
The Super Thin case is available in black, silver (though more like a frosted white) and navy (pictured).
Pick it up directly from Peel (£22/US£29) or from Amazon ( £19.99/ US$9.99, US only). Also available for S9 Plus ( £14.99/US$9.99)
Greenwich Horo Leather Folio Case for Samsung Galaxy S9
At £45/US$55 (originally £90/US$110), the Greenwich folio case is the most extravagant on this list.
It’s ideal for those seeking a bespoke, handcrafted leather case that will last the test of time. Greenwich cases are, after all, backed with a lifetime warranty. You can even have it personalized if you wish for free.
At its price bracket, you do get the case in an elegant package that includes leather cream, a lint-free cloth for cleaning, a carry case (yes, a case for your case), and leather care instructions.
In terms of the case itself, it’s lightweight yet sturdy and looks the part of its premium price tag. It has a gunmetal bumper and integrates carbon fibre protection under the leather, which means the Greenwich case can withstand the blast of a shotgun too (like the Proporta Carbon Opus case).
The case has a concealed magnetic plate that lets you use it with a car mount for hands-free use.
Greenwich also has models for the S9 Plus.
Griffin Survivor Strong for Galaxy S9
Griffin makes a series of decent Survivor branded cases, some overkill and some not protective enough, but this one sits in the ‘just right’ camp.
With a grippy matte finish to stop your S9 sliding out your hand or off a table, it’s also guaranteed to protect from up to 7ft falls.
It comes in a range of colours to suit your taste.
Pick it up for the S9 direct from Griffin (now reduced to $6) or Amazon (£4.95/$9.83)
Available for the S9 Plus from Amazon (£4.95/US$9.83).
Mous Walnut Case for Galaxy S9
With Mous cases, you get excellent function and form. This is why we have featured its cases in many of our round ups. Mous cases are extensively tested and feature a raised lip to keep your S9 screen from scratches. Every case also comes with a free screen protector.
Mous insulates the device from impact using tonnes of tiny air pockets, in what they call AirShock technology. This allows the case to remain lightweight. All this protection is packed into a beautiful wooden finish in bamboo or walnut (pictured).
If you prefer a darker case, you can go for the Carbon Fibre or Real Black Leather options – there is also the white/pearlescent option, Light.
Mous cases are made of a combination of Silicon, TPU and Polycarbonate for even more protection. The cases are also compatible with wireless charging.
Pick it up for the S9 (from £24.99/ US$34.99) and the S9 Plus (from £29.99/ US$39.99) as well.
UAG Plyo for Galaxy S9 Plus
You’re paying slightly more for this case from Urban Armour Gear (UAG for short) but you can really feel the difference. The Plyo is sturdy and is resistant to bending when we tried it out. In fact, it has met military drop-test standards (MIL STD 810G 516.6).
The Plyo was lightweight as advertised and, we found, resistant to fingerprint smudges (a quality not advertised, so a pleasant surprise). The sides of the case have rubberised grips over buttons which should also keep grime out.
You can get the Plyo in four colours: Ice, Ash (pictured), Crimson and Glacier for around £10/US$10. If you’re after the regular S9 version, you can find it on Amazon for £19.61/US$9.99.
UAG Monarch for Galaxy S9
The Monarch is on the pricier side of this list, but you get what you pay for, which is a super-rugged case that has a premium feel but is also lightweight.
The Monarch boasts five protective layers, has a textured grip and meets the military drop test standard (MIL STD 810G 516.6) two times over. Plus, it comes with a 10-year limited warranty.
Available on Amazon for US$24.89 (US only). There’s a version for the S9 Plus for around £24.95/US$24.98.
Mophie Juice Pack for Samsung Galaxy S9
However great the Galaxy S9’s battery life may be, it’s guaranteed that at some stage you’ll run out of power when you need it most and are out of reach of a charging point.
That’s when you need a battery case, that both protects your precious phone and gives you the opportunity to recharge it while out and about. Mophie is the market leading battery case maker, and it has a Juice Pack for both the S9 ( US link here) and the S9+ ( US link here), both priced at £99.95/US$99.95.
Each Juice Pack battery case features 2,070mAh battery that Mophie promises should extend your S9’s life by 32 hours.
The case works with the Mophie charge stream pad+ and Qi wireless systems. Press the LED Status Indicator button to display the battery charge status.
The S9 Juice Pack weighs 90.7g, and the S9+ case 96.4g. Each has internal rubberized support pads that protect the phone from drops and accidental falls, plus raised corners to prevent cracked screens.
Gear4 Oxford Case for Galaxy S9
Similar in look to the Hyperknit case, the Oxford case has the additional benefit of both back and frontal protection. Plus, you can keep your credit cards in the inner slot.
Although this case is only available in black, its protective features more than make up for the lack of colours. The Oxford case protects your phone from a 10 feet drop and also has a built-in viewing stand.
Available for the S9 for £34.99/ US$49.99. You can find the S9 Plus version for £34.99/ $49.99 as well.
Mujjo Full Leather Wallet Case for Galaxy S9
Dutch design firm Mujjo make quality leather cases for the top smartphones, and has brought its popular super-slim profile Full Leather Wallet Case for the iPhone X to the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus (£49.41/US$63.14).
It features a leather card pocket – marked by Mujjo’s signature slant line and stitched to the back – able to fit two to three bank, ID or commuter cards.
The leather rises 1mm above the edge of the screen, creating a raised bezel that keeps abrasive surfaces away from it.
Each case – lined with satin-like microfibre – is treated with aniline oil to enrich colour tones. They are available in Black and unique Olive colours.
Samsung Galaxy S9 Alcantara Cover
Another classic option from Samsung is the Alcantara Cover Case.
This lightweight, classy case covers the back of the device and has a soft suede-like feel. It’s designed to protect your phone from bumps, though we would still recommend using a screen protector for any unanticipated drops.
The Alcantara can be bought directly from Samsung ( US$49.99), though Samsung UK bundles the case with the phone, which is annoying if you already have the phone. You can get it for as low as £ 10.99/ US$19.99 on Amazon.
It’s available in black, blue, mint, and red. Get it here for the S9 Plus (£20.92/US$37.99).
Olixar ArmourDillo Samsung Galaxy S9 Protective Case
A favourite of ours, Olixar’s ArmourDillo case is perhaps the best companion for the butter-fingered among us. The Armourdillo offers rugged protection against drops and bumps with its two-layered, impact-resistant shell that is also textured for added slip protection.
The cut-outs provide easy access to the camera, buttons and ports. Its flip-out stand and price are additional reasons to like this case. It’s available in blue (pictured), red, and black.
Snakehive Premium Leather Cases for Samsung Galaxy S9
Snakehive’s Premium Leather cases is sure to keep your S9 or S9 Plus (£24.95/US$34.99) looking classy and protected. Snakehive, a British brand – and also one of our ongoing favourites – offers beautiful hand-crafted cases in an assortment of colours.
The wallet case has a three slots to keep credit cards and notes and a soft interior to keep your new S9 screen looking just that: new. You should have access to all ports when the case is closed.
Pick up the case directly from Snakehive. You can also find Snakehive cases on Amazon (for £26.95/US $34.99). It’s also available for the S9 Plus for the same price.
Olixar X-Tome Samsung Galaxy S9 Book Case
This case cleverly fuses old world charm with high-tech functionality. Taking a page from Twelve South’s BookBook style (pun intended) for Apple devices, Olixar’s X-Tome cases mimics a vintage leather-bound hardcover book.
The case promises protection against scratches and minor impact, so we wouldn’t recommend drop testing your S9 with this case. The case closes with a magnetic fastener and can also be converted to a stand for your device. What’s even more nifty is its storage space for cards and notes.
Available for £9.99/US$11.49. You can buy the X-Tome case for the S9 Plus on Amazon for £9.99.
Gear4 Victoria Cases for Galaxy S9
If you want to let your S9 Plus shine through, Gear4’s Victoria range of clear cases offers elegant graphics in a copper accent.
But don’t let these dainty designs fool you. The Victoria cases can protect your S9 Plus from a drop of up to 10 feet, thanks to Gear4’s partnership with D3O, a company that specializes in protective materials for military, sports, motor sports, and industrial requirements.
On a molecular level, the greater the shock is on D3O’s patented material the more rigid tightly locked it becomes. In other words, the greater the impact, the more energy it absorbs.
The Victoria case is available in an assortment of designs including Feathers and Mandala (both pictured here). Pick it up from Amazon from £15/ US$19.99.
Gear4 Battersea Galaxy S9 Case
The Battersea case can protect your S9 or S9 Plus from a drop of up to 13 feet. This again is due to the D3O material that offers additional reinforcement to the sides and back.
While this case is not particularly glamorous, or equipped with a built-in viewing stand, you do get a lightweight, highly protective bumper case that’s also compatible with wireless charging.
It’s a great no-frills option for those interested primarily in phone protection. Pick it up from Amazon for £15/ $13. Also available for the S9 Plus for £15/US$24.99.
But if you’re looking for something even more minimalist, check out the next case…
Tech21 Evo Wallet for Galaxy S9
The Evo Wallet can protect your phone from a 12-foot drop. While that’s two feet lower than the Evo Max drop test, the Wallet does have the benefit of also being, well, a wallet.
The folio design allows protection for both the front and back of your phone, and offers storage slots for credit cards, and like the Evo Max, the Wallet does not interfere with wireless signals either.
It goes without saying the Wallet is scratch-resistant. Tech21 offers a 1-year warranty on this case.
Available from Amazon for £13.99/US$21.80. Also available for the S9 Plus for £4.95/ US$26.99.
